Library Gets Green Light

18 June 2007

Southwark Council's planning committee has given the official go-ahead to a stunning new library for Canada Water.

The decision, which was taken on 31 July, means that preparation for building work on the cutting edge facility, designed by Piers Gough of architects CZWG, can now begin.

Local people have played a crucial part in the project so far, registering their overwhelming support at a series of consultation events, a whopping 95 per cent of over 300 people who took part said they were in favour.

Residents have even helped to influence the design of the new library,
commenting on the initial proposals and suggesting improvements that were later taken on board by architects and developers.

The striking, 2,485m2 aluminium-clad building will overlook the Canada Water basin and has been described as a new breed of library, serving the community in a comprehensive way.

As well as an extensive book and DVD collection, it will include a café and performance space, which local schools and community groups can use to stage shows. Also on offer will be fitness classes, story telling, IT and computer training, homework support and much
more.

David Taylor, chairman of development partner BL Canada Quays, said: "This is a critical milestone for the regeneration of Canada Water. The library will be delivered in phase one, not in the distant future. This will be the start of a long term partnership between BL Canada Quays, the council and most importantly, the local community."
