Masterplan
Canada Water sits at the heart of the historical quayside area of the Rotherhithe Peninsula.
The masterplan was created by BL Canada Quays (BLCQ) following extensive public consultation during 2005 and was approved by Southwark Council's Executive Committee in October 2005.
The masterplan is intended to provide a vision for regeneration in the area and covers the sites known as sites A, B, C, F and G. The masterplan focuses on creating a vibrant canal side community of approximately 2,700 new homes around the Canada Water basin. An exciting mix of community, retail and leisure facilities is proposed, including a new park, library and resource centre, a variety of new retail outlets and new office space. An integrated system of park spaces and waterways will be introduced to enhance the area's ecological features.
Eight guiding design principles govern the master plan, aimed at achieving social, economic and environmental sustainability for the area:
1. Canada Water is the natural centre of the Rotherhithe area
2. Reconnection of Canada Water to the wider surrounding areas
3. Design for continuous, pleasant and active street frontages
4. Creation of a series of linked public spaces to draw people through the site
5. Creation of safe and easily monitored public spaces
6. Promotion of barrier free design
7. Creation of an interesting skyline by varying building heights
8. Introduction of uses that complement existing uses in the area
