Canada Water welcomes house builder
12 September 2007
Southwark Council and BL Canada Quays are pleased to confirm Barratt Homes as their partner for the first phase of Canada Water. In a major milestone for the area, Southwark Council Executive last night agreed to a deal which saw Barratt chosen as the house builders for the first phase of the scheme.
Richard Thomas, Executive member for Regeneration said "The regeneration of Canada Water is set to transform the area bringing hundreds of additional homes, jobs and services including a landmark library building designed by Piers Gough as the centrepiece."
Now that a deal has been agreed with a house builder detailed applications will be submitted for planning consideration. Barratts have appointed PKS Architects to do the detailed design for the first phase of the scheme from a panel agreed between BL Canada Quays and Southwark Council.
David Taylor, chairman of development partner BL Canada Quays, said: "We are delighted to welcome Barratts as our partners for the first stage of the project. We are on track to deliver the first of the detailed applications early next year. We will work closely with Barratts to ensure that this major regeneration scheme delivers opportunities and amenities to the local community. The delivery of this exciting mixed use scheme has taken a major step forward".
Alistair Baird, Head of Barratts East London said "We are delighted to be involved with Canada Water in what is one of the most exciting developments being proposed in London. We will be working closely with BL Canada Quays and the local community in bringing forward a development of the highest quality. We want to see Canada Water reach its true potential as a focal point for Rotherhithe."
The Masterplan for Canada Water includes a library, leisure facilities, shops and new public spaces located around the Canada Water dock. There are plans for 2,800 homes of mixed use and tenure - of which 35 per cent will fall into the category of affordable units - and 100,000 square feet of new office, business start-up and live-work space.
