Plaza

BL Canada Quays in partnership with Southwark Council will be delivering a new civic centre in the heart of the Canada Water regeneration area. The new public space will be known as Deal Porter Plaza in memory of the thousands of workers in the area employed as porters to carry the deal wood arriving in the old Surrey Quays docks from Canada.

The new plaza occupies a key location between the Canada Water tube and bus stations, the new Canada Water public library under construction, and the first stage of the Canada Water Masterplan with the regeneration of sites A and B.

The design of the space has been developed by EDCO Design and will have the following key features:

  • A row of Canadian hardwood trees through the square
  • A high quality lighting scheme with feature lighting
  • A dock-side promenade area with terracing
  • Extensive seating which can be moved to make way for events on the space
  • Substantial cycle parking
  • Improved pedestrian crossings
  • High quality granite paving across the space and connecting to the adjacent bus and tube stations

Works are due to start in 2010 and will complete in time for the opening of the new Canada Water Library in 2011.

Construction Programme
Construction will be split into two phases.  Phase 1 will consist of works to the Canada Water Bus Station, and the area in front of the B2 building known as Area 6 to tie in with planned Transport for London resurfacing works to the bus station, and the completion of building B2.  Phase 2 will consist of the remainder of the works which will tie in with the completion and opening of the Canada Water Library.
