Regeneration Present

Southwark Council and BL Canada Quays Ltd are leading an exciting regeneration programme at Canada Water that will deliver a vibrant new centre for the Rotherhithe Peninsula, where people will come to shop, socialise or sit by the dockside and enjoy the wildlife.

The current regeneration project emerged from consultation carried out about the area's future. In early 2002 a community led selection process set out to find a master developer to undertake the core area regeneration. In July 2003 BL Canada Quays Ltd (a joint venture between 50% British Land and 50% Canada Quays) was chosen as the council's preferred development partner.

In December 2004, Southwark Council's executive approved the signing of a 10-year development agreement with BL Canada Quays Ltd, featuring six sites known as Site A, B, C, E, F and G.

A master plan was subsequently prepared by BL Canada Quays (BLCQ), which benefited from extensive public consultation resulting in 75% of local people approving its content. The master plan was formally agreed in October 2005.

The master plan now covers sites A, B, C, F and G, and its current focus is 40 acres of land around the Canada Water basin area. It aims to provide 2,700 new housing units, of which 35% are affordable, 32,450 sqm of retail floorspace, 13, 750sq metres of new office space, 5, 860sqm of leisure, a new library and creation of a new civic square.
